Arnie Shienvold Combined Intellect with Humor on the Challenging Topic of High-Conflict Families

In March 2011, approximately 115 people traveled to St. Louis, MO to attend the annual MO-AFCC/MARCH Mediation spring conference where Arnie Shienvold, PhD (pictured above) fantastically presented the complex dynamics of high-conflict families. Arnie also provided hands-on techniques for professionals to apply on this challenging population. The conference was packed full of goodies such as the unveiling of the MO-AFCC website (visit us at www.moafcc.org) and the announcement of the Honorable Michael Burton as the first recipient of the Ellen Cowell Leadership Award.

The Honorable Michael Burton, Administrative Judge of the Family Court of St. Louis County gave a heartfelt acceptance speech of the Ellen Cowell Leadership Award. Andrea Clark, dear friend and colleague of Ellen Cowell, presented Judge Burton with the award (pictured left). Judge Burton eloquently described Ellen Cowell and the collaborative manner in which she worked with others. He sincerely described her style as “Cowelling,” which provided the audience with a chuckle. Judge Burton was selected for this honor in recognition of his outstanding efforts to establish a Civil Domestic Violence Court in St. Louis County. The DV Court was established in 2009 after a detailed planning process that included community advocates, court staff, volunteer attorneys and other professionals recruited by Judge Burton to support this project. A wealth of legal and social services are now provided to victims of intimate partner violence, perpetrators, and their children, at specialized court dockets taking place each week in St. Louis County. It is widely felt that St. Louis County hosts one of the most innovative civil domestic violence courts in the region as a result of Judge Burton's efforts. The conference had another very special guest, AFCC Board President Robert Smith, JD. In his professional life, Robert is an attorney and mediator with an emphasis on high-conflict family law cases, and regularly serves as a Child and Family Investigator, Child Legal Representative and Guardian ad Litem in judicial districts throughout Northern Colorado and the Denver Metro area.

Each year, one conference attendee is randomly selected to receive a one year membership to both AFCC and MO-AFCC. This year Christine Stallis, MSW, LCSW, is the proud winner! Christine is a therapist at Kids In The Middle®. Kids In The Middle® (KITM) is a nonprofit organization that helps children, parents and families thrive during and after divorce through counseling, education and support. Congratulations Christine!
