The Lunch & Learn is a forum for Missouri professionals to share information with others in the area who work with families experiencing child custody disputes, including information on parent education programs, therapeutic programs for families and children, court services, and legal approaches.

Honorable Douglas R. Beach

Douglas R. Beach was appointed Associate Circuit Court Judge for St. Louis County Missouri in 2005 and appointed to the Circuit Court by Governor Jay Nixon in 2010. Judge Beach as been assigned to the Family Court since he was appointed to the bench in 2005. He was an incorporator of the City of Chesterfield in 1988 and served as the City Attorney for 17 ˝ years before his appointment to the bench. He was also in private practice law in St. Louis and was named in the Best Lawyers of America. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers; Missouri Bar; Massachusetts Bar; St. Louis County Bar; Past President; St. Louis Metropolitan Bar Association; member of the Women’s Lawyers Association, Hispanic Bar Association and Lawyers Association; Board Member of Children’s Home Society; Program Committee for Kids in the Middle; receiving “Champion of Kid’s Award”; named Outstanding Young Lawyer, St. Louis County Bar; in 2011 he undertook the coordination of the effort to have the St. Louis County voters vote on a 100 million dollar bond issue for the replacement of the Family Court building and the renovation of the Civil Courts building and he is now is working on the construction plans for the building; recently recognized by Legal Advocates for Abused Women and the Crime Victim Advocacy Center for work on passage of the Bond Issue for a new Family Court facility and renovations to current civil court; started the Veterans Treatment Courts in St. Louis County. Judge Beach received his law degree from New England School of Law (Cum Laude) in 1973. He retired from the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel were he served as Judge Advocate.


William P. Grant

William P. Grant received his J.D. degree from Washington University in 1974. He was a partner with Arthur S. Margulis in the law firm of Margulis & Grant for over thirty-five years and now is a partner in the firm of Grant, Miller & Smith. He has done extensive litigation in the areas of civil, criminal, domestic and juvenile law.

CIVIC/LEGAL SERVICE INVOLVEMENT: Bill is currently a member of the St. Louis County Family and Domestic Violence Council, serving on this board since its’ formation in 1996. Currently, and since it began in 2003, Bill has served as the President of the Board of Directors of Caring for Kids, a not for profit organization that provides the essential needs for children who are under the jurisdiction of the St. Louis County Juvenile Court. Bill has volunteered and served as the attorney for parents participating in the St. Louis Family Court Drug Court and volunteered as a judge in the St. Louis County Family Court Truancy Court program. He also served on the Board of the St. Louis County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children. He was a member of the St. Louis County Civil Service Commission for eight years and Chairman of the Board for two years, following an appointment to that position by County Executive Buzz Westfall. Bill also previously served on the Board of Directors of the former Deaconess Hospital. He was a member of the Board of Directors of One World Family, a not for profit organization that provided financial assistance and services for children of South Africa with or impacted by AIDS. His involvement included trips to the province of KwaZulu-Natal to work in the city and surrounding countryside of Durban, South Africa.

AWARDS/RECOGNITION: Bill was the recipient of the St. Louis County Bar Association Distinguished Service Award in 2012 and the Dudley Dunlop Distinguished Guardian Ad Litem award in 2001 given by the St. Louis County Family Court.


John Borders

John Borders specializes in divorce-related parent conflict, parent-child relation problems, and families. His specific professional roles include co-parenting counselor, parenting coordinator, divorce mediator, collaborative divorce professional, and psychotherapist. He has an independent practice in Clayton. His experience includes:
